A New Icon in Atizapán

With the goal of strengthening the Museo Tamayo, in 2010 the Museum’s extension in Atizapán de Zaragoza, State of Mexico will also be inaugurated. The new building will have a warehouse with advanced technology and the optimal physical conditions to house, conserve, and grow the holdings of the collection that Olga and Rufino Tamayo donated to Mexico. It will be a warehouse with advanced technology, so that visitors can familiarize themselves with and appreciate the life of a space of this kind.

This new space will allow the Museum to comfortably receive private collections that will enrich the Museum’s projects. And, above all, will allow the possibility of acquiring work to enrich the permanent collection.

The extension of the Museo Tamayo will also have an exhibition gallery of 350 square meters to show works of the permanent collection and to take art exhibitions to an area that today lacks these kinds of cultural offerings.

The construction of the extension will take place in a plot of land of 10,000 square meters, which was donated by the Municipality of Atizapán de Zaragoza, State of Mexico, to INBA. In order to select this architectural project, INBA held a contest won by the architect Michel Rojkind.

The new property will allow the Museo Tamayo to increase its cultural offerings and the cultural life in the State of Mexico. Moreover, this building will become a destination and cultural icon of Mexico.
