An Artistic Heritage for the World

The collection of international contemporary art that Olga and Rufino Tamayo assembled is a synthesis of the avant-garde of the years in which the collection was formed (second half of the last century) and it reveals Tamayo’s stylistic affinities, as well as his enormous passion for the latest developments in the art of his time. The collection of more than 300 works that form the collection constitute a testimony to art in an era of vertiginous and dramatic changes.

The collection includes artists contemporary to Tamayo, of similar importance to him within the histories of art in their countries, or comparable in their trajectories. It includes works of or derived from the School of Paris, British expressionism, Spanish figuration and abstract expressionism, in addition to relevant examples of Latin American artists who strove to create universal oeuvres, while rooted in the profound need to establish a regional art.

Tamayo had the vision and generosity to open the doors of Mexico to international collecting, with which he achieved a revitalization of the cultural atmosphere of the country and made it possible for numerous emerging generations of artists to find inspiration in the most direct sources of today’s classic expressions of modern art.
