The exhibition brings together paintings by Rufino Tamayo, designed by him to be part of the collection with which he founded the Museo Tamayo in Mexico City, as well as works on loan from private collections. Taken together, the works unfold the aesthetic horizons that the artist went through in his maturity, with conceptual and technical excellence. Even in the twilight of his life, the painter continued to create shapes and colors that baffled and delighted spectators. He was attentive to the events of the world, enriching the visual culture of his time.

Tamayo cultivated the classic genres of art history such as portraiture, landscape, female nudity, still life and fictional characters, updating them to his time. The exhibition displays characteristics of the artist's production in these genres, which include, in turn, constants of his pictorial work, such as references to the archaic and the popular - through pre-Hispanic art, Mexican toys and even fruits; his incessant chromatic exploration; with a synthesis of forms and expressive density; the creation of harmonies and contrasts, as well as balances and symmetries; material richness; and playful, ironic and enigmatic features of his compositions.

Although Tamayo was an excellent portraitist, his portrait production was limited. He mainly painted his wife Olga. He also resumed the landscape genre in the early sixties. It gave character and spirit to the Mexican landscape. His landscapes had the value of visual poems because of their simplicity and forcefulness. Meanwhile, in the female nude, she regained her origins when referring to pre-Hispanic art; she created figures stylized with simplicity.

Tamayo did still lifes. In this, as in other genres, he freed himself from strict figuration and stylized his drawing. Included in the exhibition, Sandías, from 1968, is a key piece of Mexican painting of his period, which exemplifies the way in which the painter created forms that merge in an atmosphere of color, of almost material qualities.

The human figures drawn by Tamayo are not mimes but inventions and fantasies. The artist filled modern Mexican art with unusual presences. For example, Hombre en rojo, handiwork What is part of this exhibition, is a gigantic, monumental figure, mechanical in appearance, even threatening. One of the machine-characters with which Tamayo referred to robotics and space exploration in the seventies of the 20th century.

The proposal to look again at Rufino Tamayo's work from these horizons confirms the validity of his work, underlines its importance and exposes the achievements with which the painter nourished the art of the 20th century and the presence of Mexico in the international arena.
