Las paradojas del internacionalismo (narradas por la colección del Museo Tamayo) traza la evolución de los deseos, exigencias y traiciones del internacionalismo a través de historias superpuestas e incompletas del primer museo de arte internacional de México.
A partir de la colección del Museo Tamayo y la historia de sus exposiciones –así como de la carrera de Rufino Tamayo como artista–, la muestra toma la década de los noventa y sus sísmicos cambios globales como eje histórico para mirar hacia atrás y hacia adelante en el tiempo, en busca de las perspectivas de los artistas en relación a los movimientos sociales, culturales y políticos que han cambiado nuestra comprensión del mundo. Las paradojas del internacionalismo es una exposición en dos partes que utiliza la colección del museo como marco, con la adición de préstamos clave de obras de artistas que han exhibido en el Museo Tamayo. La Parte I se presenta en salas y patio del museo del 27 de mayo al 1 de octubre; la Parte II se presentará en abril 2024.
La exhibición toma como prólogo los últimos años de vida de Rufino Tamayo. Esto fue cuando tuvo una importante retrospectiva que intineró a Madrid, Moscú, Oslo, San Pesburgo y Berlín, justo antes de su muerte en 1991. Coincidiendo con la caída de la Unión Soviética, la aparición de Internet y las disputas políticas de un nuevo orden mundial en ciernes, de pronto las creencias universales del internacionalismo de posguerra que dieron forma no sólo a la carrera de Tamayo, sino a la colección que construyó para el Museo Tamayo y a su visión de la institución misma, pasaron a la historia. La era del internacionalismo global había comenzado, anunciando la llegada de una generación más joven de artistas y sus visiones del mundo.

The Paradoxes of Internationalism (As Narrated by the Museo Tamayo Collection) traces the evolution of internationalism's demands, intrigues, and betrayals through the overlapping and incomplete histories of Mexico's first international art museum.
Drawing on the Museo Tamayo's collection and exhibition history—as well as Rufino Tamayo’s career as an artist—the exhibition takes the seismic global shifts of the 1990s as a historical axis from which to look backward and forward in time at artists' perspectives on the social, cultural, and political movements that have changed our understanding of the world. The Paradoxes of Internationalism is a two-part show that uses the museum’s collection as its frame, with the addition of key loans of artworks by artists who have exhibited at the Museo Tamayo. Part I is presented in the galleries and patio from May 27 to October 29; Part II will take place in April 2024.
The last years of Rufino Tamayo's life serve as a prologue to the show. This is when he had a major retrospective that toured to Berlin, Oslo, Madrid, Moscow, and Saint Petersburg, right before his death in 1991. Coinciding with the Soviet Union falling, the Internet going public, and the political wranglings of a new world order in the making, suddenly the universal beliefs of post-war internationalism that shaped not only Tamayo’s career, but the collection he built for the Museo Tamayo, and his vision for the institution itself, was history. The era of global internationalism had begun, heralding in a younger generation of artists and their world views.
